Roger Reynolds collaborated with Kosuke Matsuda to compose a new solo percussion piece titled "Sleight of Hand." This version of work is derived from Reynolds' earlier interdisciplinary music project "Knowing/Not Knowing (2022-2024)."
The composition features nine core rhythms, which are assigned to different instruments chosen by the performer and organized into three distinct mappings. These mappings are performed in sequence and are musically connected by "LINKS," which the performer semi-improvises using musical themes and language drawn from each mapping.
While each mapping presents a clear sense of rhythmic structure, the links offer fluid musical expressions using a variety of unconventional percussion instruments, such as glass plates and wooden planks.
